Roger Herto
Station Manager Notes
"MCTV represents more than twenty years or preparation and planning by representatives from the Mifflin County School District, local government officials, community members, and high school students with a dream. Everything started when Dave Runk, Mifflin County School District Superintendent of Schools, initiated the construction of a closed-circut television station at Lewistown Area High School in 1998. Media teacher Tona Williams and her students ran the studio known as LPTV (Lewistown Panther Television) which was brodcast daily to all the classrooms in the building. In the year 2000, a modest program (no actual studio) was also started at Indian Valley High School led by me, Roger Herto. That first year, my students and I actually drove from Indian Valley to Lewistoiwn High School each morning and did the morning announcents for our cross-town rivals. That was a year to remember. The following year, thanks in part to a major contribution from an organization known as MC-2000, a new studio was constructed and IVTV (Indian Valley Television) was born. For the next 10 years the two studios operated indepedently to serve the two schools. Eventually, due to state budget cuts, the two schools were consolodated into the new Mifflin County High School which opened its doors in the fall of 2011. I was honored to be selected to run the studio at the new school, and along with our engineer Matt Moore we started to chart a new course. At the start, MCTV (Mifflin County Television) was still a closed circuit signal to all of the classrooms in the new school. However, our next goal was to see the channel go county-wide on local cable TV. That vision came to fruition on April 20, 2015, when MCTV, with the support of the Mifflin County Commissioners, Lewistown Borough, Nittany Media, Inc., Comcast, and the Mifflin County School District went live on local cable television. Fittingly our first "live event" was the MCTV Morning Show, which continues to be telecast each school day. The following month our first "live" prime-time event was Measure the Candidates Night on May 6th. When the Covid pandemic hit in 2019, that prompted us to adjust and make MCTV abailable on-line with the birth of our MCTV YouTube channel. During that difficult time MCTV streamed more events than I thought was possible. To this day, MCTV remains available as both a local cable TV station, and as a streaming platform on YouTube. As we continue to grow, our focus will always be to showcase the talented students listed below, and to be a window to the local government and educational issues affecting the people of Mifflin County."
2023-24 Media Student of the Year
Sandra's commitment to MCTV over her two year tenure on the staff was incredible. Not only did she run the entire studio her senior year, but her weekly contributions being the Director of the Morning Show, while also being the Director of The 308 each afternoon, were all exceptional. She accomplished all of this while also excelling in Art and Visual Communications. Her energy, creativity and work ethic were a big boost to the crew. Next up for Sandra is South Hills, where she will be putting her skills to work pursuing a career in the world of Graphic Art Design. Sandra is just one more reason we are proud to be
Mifflin County Huskies!
